We would like to express our gratitude to Pennsylvania State Representative Amen Brown for visiting HopePHL's Baring House Crisis Nursery today! He read the book "Crown: An Ode to the Fresh Cut" by Derrick Barnes to the children and then participated in a craft activity where they created their own paper "haircuts."
Our staff deeply appreciated the chance to share the mission of Baring House and discuss how we can continue to seek support from our State Representatives to better serve our community. Thank you once again for your time and kindness, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future!

This Halloween, HopePHL's Neighborhood Advisory Committee celebrated by hosting a Service Area Briefing, partially funded by the Philadelphia Division of Housing and Community Development, at the Community Education Center. Many thanks to Community Legal Services, PECO, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, and the Division of Housing and Community Development for showing up to provide vital resources to our community! Despite the chilly weather, everyone warmed up with soup while enjoying listening to classic Halloween hits. The NAC also held its annual Halloween Decorating Contest, awarding prizes for Best Block, Best House, and Best Business. Here are the winners: Best House: 53rd & Westminster Best Block: 42nd & Ogden Best Business: Gaetano's at 38th & Lancaster Thank you to everyone who participated and embraced the spooky holiday spirit!  This report is Part 1 in a series that seeks to inform state and local practitioners and policymakers about young children identified as experiencing homelessness in Pennsylvania. It updates an earlier summary using data from the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Part 2 will focus on data from the HUD Continuum of Care System in Pennsylvania and other sources.
 West Philadelphia is known for celebrating creative people – musicians, performers, visual artists, craft creators and more. As the fall season settles in and the air becomes crisp, there is an exciting opportunity to bring neighborhoods together with the 10th Annual Halloween-themed HopePHL Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) House, Block and Business decoration contest!
While Halloween is known for its spooky costumes and candy galore, turning the annual event into a fun, community-wide activity offers more than just a chance for creativity and a few frights—it has fostered a sense of unity, safety, and holiday spirit among residents. HopePHL’s NAC uses the perennial contest to promote their services, supported by funding from the City of Philadelphia Division of Housing and Community Development. The NAC assists community members with delinquent Property Taxes, Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention and Tangled Title deed issues. The NAC also connects residents to many City Services like 311 and City ID and assistance with utility costs. West Philadelphia residents are eligible to participate for Best Home and Best Block categories by submitting photos of the festively decorated exterior of their West Philadelphia home or a group of homes from the same block. Lancaster Avenue businesses between 34th and 48th Streets are invited to participate in the Best Business category, too. Held on Friday, September 19, the event brought together residents, local leaders, and entrepreneurs from across West Philadelphia to participate in a Tai Chi showcase by local school Zhang Sah and a live pitch competition. This was part of the global Park(ing) Day campaign, which reimagines urban streets as safer, greener, and more equitable public spaces.
The competition featured six local contestants who presented their community-centered ideas from the organization’s iconic porch. A diverse panel of judges representing media, law enforcement, and state government selected Serita Lewis of URBN Seek as the winner. She will now receive capacity-building support from HopePHL’s communications and community development teams. The event also showcased the vibrancy of Lancaster Avenue, engaging those passing by in the reimagined public space. It reflected HopePHL’s mission to support individuals and families while investing in a community that fosters equity and resilience.  HopePHL is looking for creative, impactful ideas that can make a real difference! Whether it's a solution to a local challenge, a new business concept, or a way to bring people together, your idea could be the one to change everything.
