Baring House Connects Families with Young Children to Additional Resources

4/25/2023

Picture
At Baring House, Angie loves making connections for her families. Recently, she was able to connect a family to the Drexel Dornsife Center. One of the Baring House Moms had to attend an extended orientation process for a promising new job. She had two children in elementary school and one at Baring House nursery. Her father was trying to help with pickups and drop offs, but he struggled to manage three children at one time. Angie walked with him over to the nearby Drexel Dornsife Center and helped him to connect with the staff and instructors to enroll in their program. This afforded Mom ample time to return from the orientation to pick up all three children, and start a path to success at her new job!

Stress Relievers to Start Your Day - from HopePHL Behavioral Health

4/13/2023

Many thanks to Laurie Amado for this article. She is a Behavioral Health Therapist at HopePHL.

One thing that we are all familiar with is stress. Even trying to fit in some of the stress relievers can be stressful! Here is one thing to remember: The way we start the day sets the tone. Here are some simple tips to starting the day peacefully:

  • Take a few deep breaths when you wake up.
  • Pause before you rise to express gratitude. This turns the mind toward the positive.
  • Hydrate yourself! You just went 6-8 hours with no liquid- drink a glass of water when you rise. Drinking enough water actually reduces anxiety.
  • Avoid checking the news or other social media right away. There are so many potential stress triggers in those places! Challenge yourself to wait until your lunch break.

Arising From Homelessness

4/10/2023

Two young African American men
Each day teens like Terrance (name changed to protect his privacy), in our Arise transitional housing program, find much needed support and services, often for the first time in their lives, that help them build essential resiliency skills and learn to navigate life’s ups and downs so they can achieve their goals. Terrance grew up without the safety and stability that his peers had. He struggled with undiagnosed mental health issues, self-medicated with substance use, and experienced homelessness – sometimes even finding shelter in abandoned buildings. He was tired of feeling lost, wanted a home, and needed a support network of caring people.

Everyday Learning Play Spaces: A Child Friendly Space!

4/6/2023

Picture
The Early Learning Play Spaces (ELSP) team has recently been hard at work on our Child Friendly Space at the Darlene Morris Love and Care family housing program. Based on ideas and feedback we received from the staff and families there, we are happy to provide a space for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, older siblings, and caregivers to enjoy together. We transformed an unused room to accommodate an infant and reading corner, writing desk, kitchen and dress-up station and much more!

HopePHL's 1st Spring Program Fair Shines Hope, Fun and Information on the Community

4/6/2023

Picture
The atmosphere was breezy, warm and promising as program teams set up their tables with newly branded materials, giveaways, candy, and activities for HopePHL's first Spring program fair. By four o'clock, team leaders were ready for guests to check in at registration, grab their "Program Bingo" and snacks and come learn about their programs. Local residents, children, politicians, school district representatives and more stopped by to meet the teams of the newly merged organization and were met with smiles and for some, on the spot enrollments. Some danced to the music wafting through the air and munched on strawberries and pretzels, while others had in-depth discussions about rental assistance, the upcoming Teen Conference and needed resources.

Emergency Housing Opens Its Doors

4/6/2023

Picture
We are thrilled to announce the reopening of our Emergency Housing department, which is now able to accommodate larger families of four or more. We have already welcomed four families of seven to ten people, with another family of nine arriving soon.

Thanks to the city's partnership, we have been able to provide much-needed shelter to families who were previously struggling to find safe and stable housing. While we are still in the process of assessing their specific requirements, we know that baby formula and supplies are always in high demand. Our Emergency Housing department is now providing a lifeline to over 35 children, ranging from 4 months to 17 years old.

‘Thank you’ Representatives Evans, Scanlon, Wild, and Boyle!

4/3/2023

Picture
Recently, local Congressional members proposed increasing support for two key programs that support thousands of Pennsylvania's children and youth experiencing homelessness. A bipartisan "Dear Colleague" letter was circulated in the U.S. House of Representatives, calling for $800 million for the McKinney-Vento Act's Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) program and $300 million for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act (RHYA) program in the FY2024 budget.

The EHCY and RHYA programs have been underfunded for several years, but the American Rescue Plan delivered increases to these programs, thanks to bipartisan support that seized on the opportunity to expand services. As a result, Pennsylvania received a one-time allocation of $32 million to serve over 30,000 children and youth experiencing homelessness, compared to the usual budget of less than $6 million. This increase helped 8,000 children and youth experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia.

We are happy to report that Congresspersons Dwight Evans (Philadelphia), Mary Jo Scanlon (Delaware), Susan Wild (Lehigh), and Brendan Boyle (Philadelphia) have signed onto the letter. The next step is for the House Appropriations Committee to decide whether to support this effort. We are reaching out to PA-based Appropriations Committee members Guy Renschenthaler (14th District, SW Pennsylvania) and Matt Cartwright (8th District, NW Pennsylvania), and we ask advocates in those regions to contact their representatives.
